The Turkish Riviera with Kids

For many years, the Turkish Riviera has been renowned for its exceptional hospitality and world-class hotels, where every detail is designed with families in mind. From fantastic kids' clubs and professional entertainment programmes to on-site water parks, there's no shortage of fun without ever leaving the resort.  

But it's well worth setting aside a few days to discover the Turkish Riviera beyond the hotel. Ancient cities, breathtaking natural wonders and spectacular coastlines invite families to explore, adding new experiences and unforgettable moments to every holiday. 

1. A Day in Antalya: Kaleiçi Old Town & Lower Düden Waterfall 

If you'd like to combine the charm of the city with the beauty of nature, set aside a day to explore Antalya. The narrow streets of Kaleiçi Old Town, lined with colourful Ottoman houses, cosy cafés and charming souvenir shops, invite you to slow down and soak up the atmosphere. It's the perfect place to enjoy an ice cream or a cup of traditional Turkish coffee while admiring the views of the historic harbour. 

From Kaleiçi Harbour, sightseeing boats cruise along Antalya's coastline to one of the city's most spectacular natural landmarks – Lower Düden Waterfall. From a height of around 40 metres, the waterfall cascades directly into the Mediterranean Sea, and the most impressive views can only be enjoyed from the water. It's one of the few places where you can experience a waterfall from the sea, making this excursion memorable for both children and adults. 

2. Phaselis – An Ancient City Surrounded by Pine Forests and Hidden Bays 

Located near Kemer, Phaselis is a former Lycian port embraced by fragrant pine forests and three picturesque Mediterranean bays. Ancient streets, the remains of a theatre and an aqueduct lie just a few steps from the beach, making it easy to combine history with a refreshing swim during the same outing. 

Unlike busy resort towns, Phaselis offers a peaceful setting where children can explore at their own pace. Lizards often dart between the ancient ruins, cicadas fill the pine forest with their unmistakable summer song, and, if you're lucky, you may even spot a squirrel. After your walk, simply choose one of the quiet bays and cool off in the crystal-clear sea. 

3. Side – An Open-Air Ancient City 

Side is one of the best-preserved ancient cities on the Turkish Riviera, where history blends seamlessly into everyday life. The pedestrian-friendly old town leads visitors past Roman columns, the remains of an ancient theatre and the magnificent Temple of Apollo overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, making it an enjoyable place to explore with children. A fascinating detail awaits beneath your feet – in several parts of the old town, glass floor panels reveal the remains of the ancient city below. Children especially enjoy discovering history in such an unexpected way.  

Those travelling with younger children can also take the little tourist train around the old town before stopping for a traditional dondurma ice cream, where the vendors' playful tricks are often just as entertaining as the ice cream itself. 

4. Alanya Castle – History with Spectacular Mediterranean Views 

Alanya Castle is one of the Turkish Riviera's most impressive historical landmarks. Perched on a rocky peninsula, the fortress took its present form in the 13th century and remains one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the Mediterranean. Its ancient walls offer breathtaking views over Alanya Harbour, Cleopatra Beach and the surrounding coastline. 

For children, exploring the castle often feels like stepping into a real medieval fortress. They can wander through ancient walls, towers and gateways while imagining life centuries ago. As the castle grounds are quite extensive, comfortable shoes and plenty of water are recommended, especially during the summer months. 

5. The Chimera Flames – One of the Turkish Riviera's Most Mysterious Natural Wonders 

Near the village of Çıralı, in Olympos National Park, lies one of the Turkish Riviera's most fascinating natural phenomena. Small flames emerge continuously from the rocky hillside, fuelled by natural gases escaping from deep underground. They have been burning for thousands of years and are closely linked to the ancient Greek legend of the fire-breathing Chimera. 

The trail to the flames is relatively short but uphill, so comfortable footwear is recommended. Most visitors arrive in the evening, when darkness makes the flames appear even more magical. This excursion is easy to combine with a relaxing visit to Çıralı Beach or the nearby ancient city of Olympos.
